developing skills

The Sankofa co-op Mentoring Program is a mutual relationship with an intentional agenda, designed to convey specific content, along with life lessons and wisdom, from one individual to another. This skill does not happen by accident, nor do its benefits come quickly. It is a relationship based on integrity, leadership, patience and consistency. The mentor has experience and knowledge, and personally advises, counsels, coaches and promotes the career development of the mentee.

The relationship is built between a caring individual who shares knowledge and experience, with another individual, who is ready and willing to benefit from this exchange, therefore, enriching their professional journey. It is also a long term relationship that meets a developmental need to incubate and accelerate true potential.

It is a protected relationship in which learning and experimentation can occur; potential skills can develop, and in which results can be measured in regards to aptitude and competency.

"Mentoring is an important relationship since it creates a legitimate and special environment where people can take responsibility to be authentic about, and find meaning within their real-life professional experience."

The purpose of mentoring is always to help the mentee change something, whether this be to improve their performance, to develop their leadership qualities, to develop their partnership skills or to realise their vision. In summary, it is the evolution from where they are, to where they want to be.
